The Connection Between Poor Oral Hygiene and Severity of COVID-19

An international study led by researchers at McGill University has discovered that those with poor dental hygiene tend to experience more severe COVID-19 symptoms. By looking at digital medical and dental records of over 500 patients with COVID-19, they discovered that patients who showed signs of gum disease, or periodontitis, were 3.5 times more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit, 4.5 times more likely to require a ventilator, and 8.8 times more likely to die from COVID-19. Their research suggests a possible association between gum disease and severe COVID-19 disease and consequently that good oral health may be important in the prevention of COVID-19 complications.
